History of Caribou to Incorporation:

Located in Aroostook County

Consists of T13R2 and T14R2 plus Eaton Grant, which makes 2.6 square miles larger than a double township, each township being 6 square miles, for a total of 14.6 square miles.

1848 -

T13R2 incorporated as Letter H Township

1859 -

Letter H incorporated as Town of Lyndon

1869 -

T14R2 a/k/a Letter I Plantation (or Forestville) plus Eaton Grant were annexed to Town of Lyndon

1877 -

Town of Lyndon changed to Town of Caribou

1968 -

Town of Caribou incorporated as City of Caribou

VITAL RECORDS

  • Vital records on file in the Caribou City office include those from 1892 to present day.
  • Prior to 1940, all birth records are indexed under the father's name.
  • Because illegitimate births records are kept with legitimate birth records, these are not open for public inspection.
  • Genealogists are able to reference the index files on all vital records.
  • Certified copies of vital records are $10.00 each and $5.00 for additional copies of the same record.
  • Copies of birth records can be obtained from the community where the parents reside at the time of the birth or the place where the birth occurred.
  • Copies of death records are available at the place of death or where the deceased lived.
  • Copies of marriage records can be obtained from the place of residence of the groom or bride where the license was obtained. (No longer from place of marriage)

MARRIAGE INFORMATION

  • A man or woman who has reached the age of 18 may marry without parental consent.
  • If the bride and/or groom has been married before and are divorced or widowed, a certified copy of documentation showing how the last marriage ended is required.
  • The first step in filing a marriage license is to have the marriage intentions recorded in writing signed by both parties and filed at the municipal office in which at least one of them resides.
  • After the above requirements have been met, the marriage license may be issued but must be used within 90 days from the date the intentions were filed
  • Persons authorized to solemnize marriages in Maine include (if a resident of this state): a justice or judge; a lawyer admitted to the Maine Bar; or a notary public. The following may perform the ceremony whether a resident or nonresident of the state of Maine and whether or not a citizen of the United States: an ordained minister of the gospel; a cleric engaged in the service of the religious body to which the clerk belongs; or a person licensed to preach by an association of ministers, religious seminary or ecclesiastical body.

DOG LICENSES - Expires December 31st for the current year. Licensing requires current rabies and spayed/neutered certificate, if applicable. $6.00 fee for spay/neutered dog, $11.00 if not spayed/neutered. $15.00 late fee after January 31st, $25.00 warrant fee after April 1st.

as well as a $10.00 fee for processing.
