Project Update – March 2026

MaineDOT has determined the bridge can remain open to traffic during construction using alternating one-lane traffic.

Following additional structural analysis by MaineDOT’s design consultant, it has been determined that the Aroostook River Bridge rehabilitation can be completed while maintaining traffic across the bridge. Construction is expected to be staged to allow one 12-foot lane of alternating traffic to remain open during the project, eliminating the need for a long detour through Fort Fairfield as previously considered. There may still be occasional short closures of approximately 10–15 minutes at certain points during construction, and MaineDOT is exploring strategies to help manage traffic flow and minimize delays. The City of Caribou will continue working with MaineDOT, emergency services, and local partners as the project moves into final design.
